Best Time to Visit the Grand Canyon

Updated October 18, 2026 · 5 min read

Weather, crowds and light change dramatically through the year. A season-by-season guide.

Spring (March–May)

Mild days and cool nights make spring one of the best times for rim walks and hiking. Crowds build around spring break and Memorial Day. Early spring can still bring snow at the South Rim.

Summer (June–August)

Peak season. Rims are pleasant but busy, and inner-canyon temperatures are dangerously hot, so avoid strenuous hikes in the middle of the day. Monsoon storms create dramatic skies but can cancel flights for the day.

Fall (September–November)

Many travelers' favorite season: fewer crowds, comfortable temperatures and clear air. The North Rim usually stays open until mid-October.

Winter (December–February)

Quiet and beautiful, especially with snow on the rim. Dress warmly, expect icy trails and allow for weather-related delays on tours and flights.

Time of day

Sunrise and sunset bring the most color to the canyon walls. Midday light is flatter but is the best time for Upper Antelope Canyon's famous light beams in summer.
